LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

In response to our "Top Ten" Shows of the 1999-2000 Season, S-I Rodriguez/NYC writes:

"How sad that so few established organizations here truly support new works by new playwrights. Playwrights have to establish themselves elsewhere (usually outside of New York). I am tired of theater organizations that crow about their support of the theater community often citing their not-for profit status as verification and proof of their artistic integrity. All 'not-for profit' means is that they do not pay out dividends to private investors but rather reinvest their monies back into their organization. Yet, they do not invest in new playwrights (except newly established playwrights--big deal!) but do invest in 'movie' stars for box office draw."

"Who do these organizations think they're kidding? Their productions are no different from what 'for-profit' producers offer the public. The ROUNDABOUT is one example of such an organization. That 'not-for-profit' organizations are profit driven is (sadly) realistic but they should just admit it and stop taking credit for supporting and keeping new theater alive. I don't think such organizations deserve to be grouped with the 'not-for-profit' organizations that really do support and invest in new playwrights ensuring theater's future."
